Researchers have developed and tested a new insecticide made from garlic and spearmint derived compounds as a more environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic pesticides.

When people hear ‘insecticide,’ they often think of synthetic chemicals that may harm people and the environment. But plants naturally produce potent insecticidal compounds to defend against insects.

The team used nanotechnology to create a natural insecticide targeting the adzuki bean beetle. They focused on the active compounds in garlic and spearmint that give the plants their distinctive aromas.

Processing the compounds into nanoemulsions greatly increased their toxicity to the beetles.

The next step is to test the efficacy of the nanoemulsion under real-world environmental conditions.

The future will hold whether this insecticide is effective against other pests. Applying new technologies to compounds already found in nature holds enormous potential for science, agriculture, and humanity.
